PHRASAL VERB

 

1. Act against : বিরুদ্ধে কাজ করা 

Example : Nandini is acting against her parent's interests.


2. Act for : প্রতিনিধিত্ব করা

Example :Vice President acts for the President in the letter's absence. 


3. Act on /upon : নির্দেশ অনুযায়ী কাজ করা

Example : Each and everybody should act on/upon his/her conscience. 


4. Act up to : কোনো নির্দিষ্ট মান অনুযায়ী যথোচিত কাজ করা

Example : Acted up to the company's expectations. 


5. Ask after :  খবর নেওয়া

Example : After a long gap of five years, Ashima asked after the well-being of her parents. 


6. Ask for : (খারাপ অর্থে) ডেকে আনা

Example : You are asking for  trouble if you give Sayantika a space in your life. 


7. Ask for : চাওয়া ।

Example : Swapan asked for my help to overcome the situation. 


8. Ask of : চাওয়া

Example : Malini asked hundred rupees of Damini to buy a book.


9. Bear away : জয় করে নেওয়া

Example  : P.T. Usha bore away all the prizes in the spirit events.


10. Bear down  : চাপ কাটিয়ে ওঠা

Example  : He bore down all resistance. 


11. Bear up : মনোবল না হারানো/হতাশ না হওয়া

Example  : Bear up to the adverse situations in life. 


12. Bear with  : সহ্য করা

Example  : Remember that I'll never bear with such an insult. 


13. Blow off : বের করা/বের হওয়া

Example  : I saw chimneys blowing off back smoke. 


14. Blow up  : বিস্ফোরণে উড়িয়়ে 

Example  : Terrorists blew up another important building today. 


15. Blow out  : ফুঁ দিয়ে নেভানো

Example  : At that moment it seemed that someone had blown out all the lamps of the city.


16. Blow over : থেমে যাওয়া

Example  : The problem will soon blow over


17. Break down  : ভেঙে পড়া

Example  : The man's health broke down (failed) because of his addiction to drinking. 


18. Break into : ভেঙে প্রবেশ করা

Example  : The burglars broke into (entered) the jewelry shop.


19. Break up : শেষ হওয়া

Example  : Our school breaks up (closes) at 4.30 p.m.


20. Break out : প্রাদুর্ভাব হওয়়া

Example  : Dengue has broken out (appeared) once again in Kolkata. 


21. Bring about  : ঘটানো

Example  : Pride brings about (causes) one's downfall. 


22. Bring down : কমানো

Example  : The Government is trying to bring down (reduce) the prize of onions.


23. Bring out : প্রকাশ করা

Example  : Our magazine is going to be brought out (published) very soon.


24. Bring up : লালনপালন করা

Example  : Gandhiji was brought up (reared) by his parents with care .


25. Burst in on : হুট করে চলে আসা

Example  :  As the patient is ill, you should not burst in on him.


26. Burst into : কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়া

Example  : Deb burst into tears at the news of his sister's death. 


27. Burst out  : রাগে/হাসিতে ফেটে পড়়া

Example  : The teacher burst out laughing at the child's antics.


28. Burst with : উপচে পড়া

Example  : The state granary was bursting with grain but the poor were without food. 


29. Call in : ডেকে আনা

Example  : Call in (send for) a doctor immediately. 


30. Call for  : দাবি করা

Example  : The minister called for an explanation of the unwanted situation. 


31. Call on : দেখা করা

Example  : I went to his office to call on (meet) him.


32. Call up : মনে করা

Example  : I tried hard to call up (remember) his name,but failed. 


33. Carry about : সঙ্গে রাখা

Example  : Nowadays people need not carry about large sums of money while travelling. 


34. Carry away : আত্মহারা করে তোলা

Example  : He was carried away by his enthusiasm


35. Carry on : চালিয়ে যাওয়া

Example  : Carry on my dear friend, Delhi is still miles away. 


36. Carry out  : পালন করা

Example  : You should carry out the instructions of the project manager carefully. 


37. Catch at : সুযোগ গ্রহণ করা

Example  : A drowning man catches at a straw.


38. Catch on : চট করে ধরা

Example  : Tarun is catching on quite fast.


39. Catch up with : নাগাল পাওয়া

Example  : Go ahead,we will catch up with you at the next crossroad


40. Come across  :  দেখা হওয়া

Example  : I came across (met) the man in the market yesterday

 

41. Come by : পাওয়া

Example : It is difficult to come by (get) these old books now.

 

42. Come of : জন্মগ্রহণ 

Example : Rabindranath Tagore came of  (was born of) a rich family. 

 

43. Come off : অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়া

Example  : Our Annual Sports Day is coming off (taking place) soon.

 

44. Cry down : নিন্দা করা 

Example  : It is customary nowadays for the opposition to cry down every policy of the government. 

 

45. Cry for  : দাবি করা

Example  : Transgenders are crying for their rights in the society. 

 

46. Cry off  : পিছু হটা

Example  : Parimal Mitra cried off at last from his earlier decision to contest in the municipal election. 

 

47. Cry out : প্রতিবাদ করা

Example  : People are crying out against the government for imposing fresh taxes. 

 

48. Cut across  : সংক্ষিপ্ত পথে চলা

 Example  : As they were in a hurry, they cut across the wetland. 

 

49. Cut away  : কেটে পড়া

Example  : Feeling the situation becoming difficult, they cut away immediately. 

 

50. Cut down  : কমানো

Example  : It is better to cut down your expenses than borrow from others. 

 

51. Deal in : ব্যাবসা করা

Example  : Bapi deals in fresh vegetables. 

 

52. Deal out  : বাটোয়ারা করা

Example  : Now deal out the cards , it's your turn. 

 

53. Deal with : মোকাবিলা করা

Example : Tulika wanted my help to deal with this type of problem. 

 

54. Fall away  : ছেড়ে যাওয়া

Example  : His fans fell away as years advanced.

 

55. Fall in : ভেঙে পড়া

Example  : The dilapidated building fell in (collapsed) in the recent earthquake. 

 

56. Fall out  : ঝগড়া করা

Example  : The sons of the old man fell out (quarrelled)  over their property. 

 

57. Fall through  : অসফল হওয়া

Example  : Our plans fell through (failed) because of lack of effort.

 

58. Get at : নাগাল পাওয়া

Example  : The little boy could not get at (reach) the upper branches of the three. 

 

59. Get back  : পরে যোগাযোগ করা

Example  : I shall get back to you very soon. 

 

60. Get to : পৌঁছানো

Example  : Leave your home early to get to (reach) your destination in time. 

 

61. Get up : ওঠা

Example  : Get up (rise) early in the morning. 

 

62. Give away  : বিতরণ করা

Example  : He gave away (distributed) dresses to poor people on his birthday. 

 

63. Give off  :নির্গত হওয়া

Example  : The dustbin in giving off (emitting) a foul smell.

 

64. Give up : পরিত্যাগ করা

Example  : You must give up (shun) bad habits. 

 

65. Go after  : পিছু নেওয়া

Example  : The police went after (followed) the thief. 

 

66. Go on : চালিয়ে যাাাওয়া

Example  : Go on (continue) with your studies. 

 

67. Go through  : পড়া

Example  : I have gone through (read) this article several times. 

 

68. Go up  : বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া

Example  : The cost of living has gone up (increased).

 

69. Hand back  : ফেরত দেওয়া

Example  : Do not forget to hand back this rare book in time.

 

70. Hand down  : পরম্পরাগতভাবে চলা

Example  : These traditions were handed down by our ancestors. 

 

71. Hand in  : পেশ করা

Example  : After a hot exchange of words, the manager handed in this registration to the owner of the company. 

 

72. Hand over  : হাতে তুলে দেওয়া

Example  : The angry mob handed over the thief to the police after beating him black and blue. 

 

73. Hold back : গোপন করা

Example  : I never hold back anything from my parents. 

 

74. Hold down  : কমিয়ে রাখা

Example  : Employers usually hold down the wages of the employee in their own interest. 

 

75. Hold in : সামলে রাখা / সংযত করা

Example  : It is very difficult to hold in tears in such a tragic situation. 

 

76. Keep away  : দূরে রাখা

Example  : Keep away (remove) children from evil company. 

 

77. Keep back  : লুকিয়ে রাখা

Example  : Sumit kept back the news of his illness from me.

 

78. Keep off  : দূরে রাখা / এড়়িয়ে চলা

Example  : Keep off (avoid) main roads.

 

79. Lay aside  : সরিয়ে রাখা

Example  : Durnibar laid the book aside and looked at me straight. 

 

80. Lay by  : সঞ্চয় করা

Example  : Lay by (save) some money for the future. 

 

81. Lay down : আত্মবলিদান দেওয়া

Example  : Many people laid down (devoted / sacrificed) their lives for the freedom of our country. 

 

82. Lay out  : সাজিয়ে রাখা

Example  : The Price commanded his servants to lay out the banquet. 

 

83. Let down  : হতাশ করা 

Example  : I promise I'll never let you down before anyone. 

 

84. Let in : ঢুকতে দেওয়া

Example  : Forgive the boy and let him in.

 

85. Let out  : ভাড়া দেওয়া

Example  : This room will be let out for the next season. 

 

86. Let up  : কমা

Example  : It seems to me that the rain will never let up.

 

87. Look after  : যত্ন করা 

Example  : Mother Teresa looked after (took care of) the poor people of our country. 

 

88. Look for  : খোঁজা

Example  :I am looking for (searching) a chance to show my skills. 

 

89. Look out : সন্ধান/আশা করা

Example  :I shall look out for some of my uncle's old books.

 

90. Look over : পরীক্ষা করা

Example  : Look over the papers well before buying the flat. 

 

91. Make after : পিছু নেওয়া

Example  :The mob made after the thief just then.

 

92. Make for  : যাত্রা করা

Example  : The Titanic was making for (going to) the American coast. 

 

93. Make out : বুঝতে পারা

Example  : I am trying to make out (understand) my friend's problem. 

 

94. Make up : মিটিয়ে নেওয়া

Example  : They made up (solved) their old quarrel and became friends. 

Or ; Try to make up (compensate) for the loss.

 

95. Pass away  : মারা যাওয়া

Example  : APJ Abdul Kalam, Ex-President of India passed away in a hospital of Manipur. 

 

96. Put on : পরিধান করা

Example  : Little girls put on  (wear) new dresses on their birthdays.

 

97. Put off : পিছিয়ে দেওয়া

Example  : The match was put off (postponed) due to rain. 

 

98. Run away  : পালিয়ে যাওয়া

Example  : The little boy ran away ( fled) from his home for fear of being beaten. 

 

99. Set on : লেলিয়ে দেওয়া

Example  : The man set the Doberman on me.

 

100. Take after  : সদৃৃশ হওয়া

Example  : The twins take after (resemble) their mother.

 

101. Take over : অধিগ্রহণ করা

Example  : His son took over (undertook) charge of the company after his death. 

 

102. Turn down  : প্রত্যাখ্যান করা

Example  : I  turned down (rejected) his proposal. 

 

103. Turn up  : আসা

Example  : Nobody turned up (came) on time.
