Read the text given below and answer the questions that follow:
Once I crept in an oakwood – I was looking for a stag.
I met an old woman there – all knobbly stick and rag.
She said: ‘I have your secret here inside my little bag.’
Then she began to cackle and I began to quake.
She opened up her little bag and I came twice awake –
Surrounded by a staring tribe and me tied to a stake.
They said: ‘We are the oak-trees and your own true family.
We are chopped down, we are torn up, you do not blink an eye.
Unless you make a promise now – now you are going to die.’
Activity 1
Write the correct alternative to complete the following sentences:
i. The old woman was all knobbly stick and rag .
ii. The old woman opened a little bag .
iii. The bag contained the poet's secret .
Activity 2
Fill in the blanks by choosing the correct alternative given in brackets:
A kite-flying festival was being organised (organise/being organised/organised) on last Sunday to promote (promote/promoted/promoting) the use of cotton strings which is (is/were/ are) considered for birds.
Activity 3
Describe in about 100 words the process of making a statue.
Use the following points:
Plaster-of-paris mixed with warm water – cast of statue made with wood – mixture poured in cast – left for the mixture to harden – cast carefully removed – statue is taken out.
The process of making a statue
A statue is a sculpture of a person, animal etc. made of stones, wood, plaster-of-paris, etc. Today we will discuss the process of making a statue with plaster-of-paris.At first, take some water in a bowl and warm it in the stove. Now mix the Plaster of Paris with the warm water. Now with the help of some tools make a cast of statues made with wood. Next, we have to pour the mixture into the cast. Now left the Plaster of Paris's mixture to harden. After 5-6 hours check the solidity of that mixture. Then remove the cast carefully, and the statue is taken out.
